    Richard P. Ballou, age 93, of Camden, died on July 1, 2015 at his home. He was born in Frankfort on December 29, 1921, son of Clarence and Gertrude Pomeroy Ballou. He was a member of the Frankfort Baptist Church, serving on the Board of Trustees. Mr. Ballou married Winifred Witzigman in the Camden Methodist Church on July 24, 1948. The couple celebrated their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary in 2013. His loving wife died in January 2014.

    After graduating from Frankfort High School, Dick worked at Remington Arms in Ilion and was also the plant fire chief, also serving as a police officer in Frankfort, until 1955, when he moved to Camden, where he operated a gas station and garage. He and his family operated the Mad River Motel for many years. He also founded and operated Ballou Gas Service, selling and installing propane and appliances in the area until retiring in 1985.

    As a Staff Sergeant in the 27th Armored Infantry Battalion, 9th Armored Division, he led one of the first groups of soldiers over the bridge captured at Remagen over the Rhine River in World War II . A Presidential Unit Citation was awarded to the Battalion for taking and holding the bridgehead, which hastened the end of WWII. The Battalion was also awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for their efforts in the Battle of the Bulge. Among other awards were the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, and campaign medals for Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was a Past President and Director of the 27th AIB Association and hosted their reunion in Rome, NY, in 1990. He was a Past Commander of Moran Post American Legion

    Dick was active in the volunteer fire service since 1941 as a member and as chief of the Frankfort Fire Department. Later joining the Camden Fire Company, he was Oneida County Deputy Coordinator for many years and graduated from the New York State Fire Academy as a fire investigator. He successfully investigated many fires and assisted at all major fires of his thirteen assigned departments. He was Past President and a life member of the Oneida County Volunteer Firemen’s Association, a life member of the Oneida County Fire Chiefs’ Association, a member of the New York State Fire Chiefs’ Association, New York State Fire Coordinators’ Association, formerly a member of the Central New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association, Firemen’s’ Association of the State of New York and the International Association of Arson Investigators.

    In April of 2008 Dick received a pin marking fifty years of service in the Camden Volunteer Fire Department. He had previously been a member of the Frankfort F. D, serving since the age of 20. He was a “ham” radio amateur with station call letters AC2I. He was Coordinator for the Oneida County Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service and was a Past President of the Rome Radio Club and a member of the Amateur Radio Relay League. In March of 2008 Dick received a Citation of Merit from an Official Observer of the FCC for his work as net control of AFAR (Armored Force Amateur Radio) net. In the Masonic orders, , he was a member of Olive Branch Lodge #40 in Ilion, a Past High Priest of Darius Chapter Royal Arch Masons in Camden, a Past Commander of Rome Knights Templar, and a Noble of the Shrine at Ziyara Temple in Utica. Dick also enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, bird watching, and getting on the internet, and loved to travel in the USA and abroad, visiting Europe six times, cruising the Caribbean, touring Alaska, and seeing the Far East, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, Macao, and South China.

    He leaves five sons and their wives, Lawrence and Denise in Liverpool, David and Margaret in Rochester, George in Camden, Thomas and Patricia Weber in LaFargeville, and Edward and Kristine in Vernon; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Ballou in Oswego; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

    Funeral services will be held Monday, 7 p.m., at the LaRobardiere Funeral Home, Inc., 109 Main St. Camden, NY. Interment will be Tuesday, 11 a.m., in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday from 4-7 p.m., at the funeral home prior to the services.
