    Joel Shapiro
    August 13, 1939 - June 17, 2015


    Joel Shapiro, 75, of Sparta, NJ passed away on June 17, 2015.
    Joel was born in Brooklyn, resided in New York, Pennsylvania, and Illinois before moving to NJ.
    He served in the US Army during the Korean War and was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. He began his career in manufacturing engineering with Hoffman Electronics in Chicago, and subsequently became the Manager of Manufacturing for the Controls Division of The Singer Company for 11 years.
    In 1977, Mr. Shapiro formed Bonjoel Enterprises of Des Plaines, Illinois, a computer consulting firm providing custom software to small businesses. Upon relocating to Sparta, NJ in 1984, Mr. Shapiro became the President of Bonjoel, Inc. and Joelbon LLC and, in partnership with Aurora Manufacturing, developed custom software for the meat and poultry industries. He retired in 2013.

    He held an Amateur Radio License issued by the FCC for over 60 years. Joel was accredited as a Volunteer Examiner with the American Radio Relay League, was a creative woodworker, accomplished photographer and a talented self-taught musician; playing guitar and theatre organ. He was a member of the Sussex County Amateur Radio Club, Garden State Theatre Organ Society (GSTOS), and the New York Theatre Organ Society (NYOS).

    Joel is Predeceased by parents Doris (Kardonsky) and Louis Shapiro and by son, Laurence in 2009.
    He is survived by his Wife of 45 years, Bonnie (Snow), Daughter-in-law, Maureen Griffin-Shapiro of Maricopa, AZ, Granddaughters: Jessica Shapiro of Maricopa, AZ, Lindsey Conrad of Silverdale, WA, Mallory Chapin and husband, Walter, of Spanaway, WA; 3 great-grandchildren, Cousin, Frank Catenaccio and wife, Trudy, of Corolla, NC, Sister-in-Law, Barbara McKinley of Macon, GA, and a host of adopted family and friends.

    The family would also like to thank Dr. Bohdan Halibey, Dr. May Abdo-Matkiwsky, Dr. Federico Steiner and Dr. Nick DeBitetto for the many years of kind and compassionate care they provided, as well as the staff at Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice who took excellent care of Joel during his final days.

    No formal services are planned at Joel's request.
