I placed an ad on QTH.com:
    RADIOHF - WANTED: RME-45 RECEIVER
I AM LOOKING FOR A CLEAN WORKING RME-45 RECEIVER.
    Listing #914787 - Submitted on 05/29/11 by Callsign W9CAR.

    I received a reply from:

    ZR6GMG
    Gareth Morris
    Winchcombe, Gloucestershire
    United Kingdom,
    England

He told me he had a real nice one with matching speaker over there. Now, I have been an active ham since 1959 and have bought & sold a lot of radio equipment. He stated that he would sell it to me for $160 shipped. He sent me several pics when I asked for them, all looked ok, so I said OK, He wanted me to send the money via Western Union. I have used Western Union several times in my life for other things, so I knew how to do it online. Western Union wanted to charge a $22 fee to send the money. I emailed Gareth ZR6GMG again and about the fee and he said to deduct the fee and send the rest, so I did, $138.00. ( I know what you are thinking guys) should have known better! Yeah, now in hind site sure. I have never been scammed, before, but have seen a lot of it. I did as much of a check on him as was seemingly available. He claimed Fed Ex & UPS were to far away and to expensive so he shipped it via a company named: First Flight Courier Express. I pulled their up their website. All seemed in order. Hhttp://www.firstflightcourier.cz.cc He provided the tracking number: 56X00000058US. The number seemed to work. Then it was supposed to transfer to FedEx when it reached the states. So, I followed it for several days. The tracking system stated on the status line " in transit " Then on June 9th, 2011 the tracking info changed to:

    From Gareth Morris
    To Ralph Henes
    Parcel RME-45 RECEIVER
    Current Location Mexican Border Post
    Date 9-Jun-2011 17:30:51
Destination 402 South Owen Drive Madison, WI 53711 USA
    Status: Withheld By Customs

Now, that made alarms really go off for me.
First of all, why is it "withheld by customs"
And 2nd, why & how did it get to the Mexican Border Post coming from the UK? This is when I began to smell a rat.

Then on June 10, 2011 I received an email from Gareth ZR6GMG stating:

    Hi,
I spoke to the shipping officer today and he says there is being a little problem with Custom officer assigned to supervise the delivery of your shipment. He says the shipment is being placed on On Hold by the Mexican Customs. The shipper officer says the Customs are asking for a Customs clearance and Insurance certificate. I was able to pay $110 to cover Insurance but its only $95USD left to be paid. I would have loved to pay the balance but my wife is currently down with chronic cancer and she is at hospital undergoing treatment. I lost my daughter to cancer last year so I hope you understand that I really need to take care of my wife. You would need to get the balance sent as soon as possible so the shipment can be released and assigned for delivery. Let me know your thoughts.

    73,

    Gareth.

    ----------------------

My immediate reaction from that email and it's sentence phrasing told me that this person was UNEDUCATED IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. How can that be, he lives in the UK !! Or so I thought. I then went to the HAMCALL.NET website and plugged in his call: You guessed it:

    G Morris, ZR6GMG
    PO Box 100018 Moreleta Plaza
    Pretoria, 0044
    REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA
    ----------------------------------------------------

Now the wording of his email made a loud click in my head! I AM OUT $138.00 for the first time I got scammed. I have sent him 3 emails asking him to re-think the price of his reputation to no avail. So gang, be aware of ZR6GMG. He flushed his reputation for $138.00 !!!

I hope this story will help others to beware of this pattern of theft. I will survive without the $138.00, but I hope someone who might know him will pound knots where they are needed !

The SARL database defaults to the QRZ.COM website. No email address shown. The email address I have from the original communication is: zr6gmg@yahoo.co.uk If that is NOT his real address, I would hope he would communicate with me. I will be glad to clear his name if I am in error. Until then, my statements stand. The HAM CALLNET website: http://hamcall.net/ shows the address as: G Morris, ZR6GMG
    PO Box 100018 Moreleta Plaza
    Pretoria, 0044
    REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA

    Fake First Flight Courier Site

I am really sorry that this happened to you.

The link you provided is to a fake "First Flight Courier" website,
one of several. (There is a REAL, legit First Flight Courier iin India)

Fake First Flight? THEY are the REAL scammer and the REAL
"leaders" of these type of scams. (Offering something for sale,
saying they shipped it, giving false "tracking numbers" then asking for
    crazy extra fees.

It ALL fits the "classic" FAKE First Flight Courier Scam Modality.

I would not be so quick to paint ZR6GMG as the real scammer.
I believe hs callsign has been "Hacked" and they are using his name, too.
Have you done any UK or South African Phone searches on that name?

I have seen the FAKE First Flight Couriers scam many people,
including several hams, this way. One Russian ham got scammed
by the FAKE First Flight Couiers for over 2,000 UK Pounds before he
was asked pay a 1,420 Pound VAT (Value Added Tax, a UK IMPORT Tax).
He then came up on QRZ and asked if this VAT was normal for a ham
    transaction.

That particular First Flight website, and the IP Adresses of the
people running it, was linked to LAGOS, NIGERIA. I know this
for a fact, because I did the tracing. I can't believe they are STILL using
    this email: firstflightcourierupdate@live.com.
and this phone number they list: +44 702 406 7695
is a UK Cell Phone Forwarding number, probably to Lagos.

Perform an IP Address Trace on any emails you have received
    from firstflightcourierupdate@live.com. If you don't
    know how
to do this, contact me via PM or my QRZ email.

Again, sorry this happened to you.
But respectfully, compared to other scams First Flight has
gotten over on hams, you got off easy.

    UPDATE ! 6-16-11
I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH THE REAL ZR6GMG IN CAPETOWN, SOUTH AFRICA. HE IS A REAL NICE GENTLEMAN AND HAS EXPLAINED HIS SITUATION QUITE TO MY SATISFACTION. HE WAS NOT INVOLVED IN THE SITUATION AT ALL. I NOW KNOW WHY THE QRZ.COM LISTING SAYS WHAT IT DOES, AND I KNOW HE WILL CORRECT IT WHEN HE CAN. I AM HOPING THE INTERNATIONAL INVESTIGATORS CAN TRACK DOWN THE FAKE PHOTO ID AND THE PERSON WHO USED IT IN LONDON, AND FIND OUT HOW IT GOT THRU THE WESTERN UNION OFFICE THERE. I AM SURE I WILL NOT SEE THE MONEY AGAIN, BUT THAT IS LESSON LEARNED. SO, I HERBY WISH TO CORRECT MY INITIAL IMPRESSION OF GARETH MORRIS ZR6GMG. HE IS AN HONORABLE HONEST GENTLEMAN. I HAVE APOLIGIZED TO HIM DIRECTLY FOR MY INITIAL REMARKS, AND HE & I WILL WATCH THIS THING EVOLVE TOGETHER. 73, RALPH W9CAR

ZR6GMG is not a UK call sign, we have foundation licenses e.g. M3xxx or M6xxx, Intermediate license holders 20xxx or 21xxx and full Start with a Gxxxx or M0xxx

Should help others outside the UK in future.

Maybe you can ask the mods to change the title of this thread to
reflect the fact that he is not a scammer?
    Just a thought.........

Re tracing the fake ID, that as you noted, is a lost cause.

The problem is that the "cash pickup" guys in the scam outfit
do not use a proper (stand alone) Western Union office. There are WU
services offered in liquor stores and small markets in bad parts of town.

    Everywhere, in all countries.
Many of these "satellite WU services" are indeed in kahoots with the scammer and don't
ask for photo ID, make up a fake Driver's License #, or just take a bribe
    .

At a real WU office (That's all they do, WU, not part of a market)
they have pretty tight security. They take scans of your ID and take your photograph as well.

Another part of the Western Union scam is their "Money In Minutes" service.
Usually when you send money via WU, it is to a specific person in a specific city.
i.e. "Joe Blow, Seattle, WA, USA"
BUT if Joe Blow asks you to send it using the "Money In Minutes" service,
he can actually pick it up ANYWHERE...
    (
with an ID, fake or otherwise)...in 15 minutes.
So one may think the money is going to Seattle but may be picked up in Tampa, FL.
I know this for a fact, I called up WU Customer Service and asked them.
I should have also asked them if that works with international money transfers.
Will put it on my "to do" list.

I have received but did not respond to a couple of email phishing letters from a Mr. Gareth Morris in the U.K. They are running several different kinds of scams. This name must have been one of the more successful ones they used.
!!!!!!!!!BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!! of anyone claiming to be Gareth Morris in the U.K. for ANY reason.
