The tower needs a few diagonal members to make the structure more rigid.

I am loving the homebrew tower.

Personally I'd like to see some diagonal bracing but providing the joints are secure enough to act as rigid connections & not pinned joints the structure could be acting as a vertical vierendeel girder.

This is true... But, Vierendeel Girders (usually) require larger chord members to resist the bending moments.

But hey, if YI3WHR is happy with it then I'm happy for him. Nothing better than a tower and directional antenna for working that DX. Great addition to your station...

Yes, you're right. They also need definitely rigid connections, not just sort-of rigid :)

But if that tower is just 20ft scaffold poles for the lower section and what looks like another 10ft on top then I think he'll get away with it providing the joints are checked regularly. Its quite a chunky design.

Having been a structural engineer for the early part of my life I always said that if I ever got to the point where I had a garden big enough to put up a 60ft tower it would be 61ft from anything else in all directions :)

But you have to admire anybody who builds a tower just from material he has to hand. Nice going Wahhab.
