Yaesu, at least in the US, gets its programming software from RT Systems. I've purchased all my software from RT and they told me I had to have separate programs for each type of radio I have. Because the radios have different features, you have to have a different programming software for each one.

The FT-7900 is a dual-bander and the 8900 is a quad-band. The 8900 has cross-band repeat and the 7900 doesn't. Those two differences are enough to require the use of two separate programming programs.

On the plus side RT Systems Yaesu programming software now allows you to copy and paste from one program to another. It didn't used to do that. So if you want all of what is in your 7900 to be in your 8900 you can copy and paste into the new software and then start adding new stuff.
