What is the proper description and/or source for the correct plug which fits the Linear Amp switch line connector on back of modern Yaesu tranmsceivers ?
Manual has a pinout, but no description of the connector.
Would be handy to keep a patch cord, in the event that my "portable spare" rig needs to serve as station primary.
Tempted to pull the cover, solder in a pigtail, and hang an inline RCA jack out the back.

It is a mini DIN connector, You just also need to know how many pins. The configuration of pins is determined by the number of pins. Note, the ARRL review of that radio recommended NOT using it with an amp because of the high level of Transmit phase noise would lead to some fairly high level skirts around the main signal after it is amplified.

As a side note, pretty much all the DIN type cables that work with the FT 857/897 radios also work with the FT891.

This is what you need if you only want to PTT an amp. It's an 8-pin mini DIN on one end with an RCA plug on the other:
