Just picked up a nice clean FT-901DM and both the dial and meter lights are out. Can anyone tell me the easiest way to access them?

Yaesu made an design improvement after the FT-101 series and installed two axial lead lamps in front of the meter, so there is no need to remove the meter movement to replace these incandescent lamps.

Yaesu still offered up the FT-101s, of all varieties,

Better to remove the front panel or remove just the VFO ? .....does the meter come out from the rear?

    FT-901DM SERVICE MANUAL

    PAGES 3-1 and 3-2 PICTORIALS

Page 3-1 : NOTE How many screws must be removed to get Top and Bottom Covers OFF.
Beginners and Novices routinely loose screws —- use containers or bags.
Disassembly Procedure: Narrative Instructions (Yaesu Bench Tech) for initial steps.

Page 3-2 : SEE the Light Assembly (bulb/lamp located) for VFO in Pictorial??
Assembly shown in empty space of Front Panel (where VFO assembly resides).
    NO.
The front panel of this radio is a Layer Cake ... in order to get to the Meter,
mounted on the metal front ... you have to take off those Plastic Design Pieces (Bling).
Clearly shown in Pictorial on Page 3-2. Meter mounted to front metal sub-panel.
BULBS? Already provided a Clear Photo — you need to remove front plastic of meter.

You have to deal with VFO, to remove plastic front panel !!

Take the opportunity to clean everything (knobs and panel) plus give the potentiometers a shot of FaderLube or similar cleaner while the front is apart.

I'm going to do the same procedure to my '901 over the Christmas holidays.
