I hadn't seen any details on doing this mod to the FT-5DR yet, but the process is the same as for the FT-3DR and after removing the 000 resistor the radio does reset and needs to be programmed again.

I'm a filthy heathen so I just used a pair of tweezers to grip the sides of the resistor and it pulled right out with almost no resistance (ha).

I kept the antenna removed and verified that the radio would transmit on GMRS channel 1 frequency.

    This should open the TX range to 140 - 174 and 420 - 470.

No, and unfortunately the radio caught fire from the 1 second of transmitting without it so I had to put in an order for a new one.

So you soldered the resistor back in and returned the radio as if it wasn't ever modified?

Another great reason to not buy a used radio without first inspecting it. Butchers, I tell ya, Butchers! Nothing to be proud of here.

I truly think the OP is spoofing about the radio catching fire without the antenna on it.

How is it catching fire a bad thing? It's a Yaesu after all. BTW>Did Yaesu finally introduce an HT with usable audio?
