I think the ARRL should take them over.

Me too....but.....there's a way.....
AM BC stations are supposed to be within a few Hz of their assigned frequencies. So all you need is to find one that is right on a multiple of 100 kHz. Not as accurate as WWV, but close.
Or, there are "GPSDO" units ("GPS Disciplined Oscillator") that can be used as sources. All SS, though.
Perhaps the cheapest solution is TCXOs.
Hmm....."GPS Disciplined Oscillator".....suggests some pretty wild imagery......."Fifty Shades Of Accuracy", anyone?
