Just to save some users from doing a lot of fruitless searching, here is some info on this week's Patch Tuesday failures for Windows 10 Version 1709 update my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. You remember that one; the one that recently lost Microsoft Print to PDF. Three attempts to update so far. I have tried the stuff like turning off all non-Microsoft programs, stopping anti-virus (mine is Microsoft's own antivirus), running "Fix Windows Update errors", running update troubleshooter ad nauseum.

    and here:

For Dell users who got far enough in the update process for Windows KB4103727 to actually install, here is what we likely would have faced:

    Good luck.

All is well. I keep my data and stuff on a separate partition from Windows. That allows me to create images of the two partitions that Windows 10 uses. I had created an image on April 15, so I restored it, overwriting the current flaky installation. I use Macrium Reflect for imaging and restoring, and I have a USB hard drive dock to store images on several hard drives for 5 computers.

Once I got back to my known good April 15 image, which I had created right after I updated to the latest Windows 10 at the time, I then waited the update notification to appear. It downloaded and installed the May Patch Tuesday update with no problems. As a bonus, I got my Microsoft Print to PDF back, since it was working fine as of the April image.

That is my plan for the future: monthly images, made from fresh Windows 10 installs, before bit rot sets in and inevitably fails Windows features and updates.

Lovely. Too bad I didn't see this earlier!

I was just getting ready to do some more antenna modeling and Win10 (under a VM on a Mac) insisted on an update YET AGAIN, which I allowed. It's been over 15 minutes and only 10% done. Arghh!

I so wish I could get EZNEC and one other antenna program to run with Wine on OS X. Then I could kiss Windows goodby forever.

    MS new motto.

Well my update finally finished and seems to be working.
