I am new at this winding business and I have a question.

    Is this winding too loose?

    Thanks

It gives the ferrite a softer surface... Either over time, or when you wrap the ferrite, the wire coating can get rubbed off. The Fiberglass tape acts as a cushion and reduces the wear on the wire coating. I can also really tighten the wire on the ferrite knowing that the coating is somewhat protected from the surface of the ferrite.

BTW, bravo for you in deciding to wind your own and not buy. One learns a lot that way!

This is the homebrew forum, so homebrew away; it's what ham radio is all about.
Then, if what you are building doesn't work there are lots of helpers here who will spring into action and you will have made their day and given them something to do.
