William A. Schumann, KA5TUF SK 10-10 Number: 63328 FISTS Number: 1430 OOTC Number: 2660 Nov. 25, 1927 - Sept. 18, 2017 TEMPLE, TX William Schumann passed away Monday, Sept. 18, 2017. He was born Nov. 25, 1927, in Indianapolis, IN and was married to Martha "Lou" Schumann for 69 years. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific Theater with the 304th Signal Operations Bn. Graduated as a mechanical engineer from the Rose Polytechnic Institute, Terre Haute, IN, and from the Advanced ROTC program received a Reserve Commission in the Corps of Engineers and later transferred to the Air Force. Employed by the Allison Division of GM, in Indianapolis, IN as a flight test engineer during the early development of aircraft turboprop engines. He was active on the Allison Turboliner (America's first turbine powered transport), a modified 5 engine B-17G flying test bed used for engine/propeller performance testing, Lockheed C-130A and Electra programs, Convair 340 turboprop conversions, and the Douglas XA2D Skyshark flight test program at Edwards Air Force Base. While in the GM Washington Office, he moved to the Northrop Aircraft Corporation, where he later managed offices in Houston, TX; Omaha, NE; and Oklahoma City, OK. He was active for many years with the Boy Scouts, serving as a Scoutmaster and Explorer Leader until both sons became Eagle Scouts. He was a member of the Oklahoma City Siloam Lodge #276, Guthrie Scottish Rite, India Shrine, Church of the Savior, and a life member of the Deaconess Hospital Auxiliary. He was an avid sail boater and amateur radio CW operator (KA5TUF). He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward F. and Katherine M. Schumann, of Indianapolis, IN; brother, Dr. Edward L. Schumann, of Kalamazoo, MI; sister-in-law, Mildred Longo, of Southfield, MI, and husband Mike, of Bradenton, FL. Survived by two sons, William "Bill" Schumann & wife Lynda, of Troy, TX; and James J. Schumann & wife Mary, of Woodway, TX; daughter, Linda Gibson & husband, Dr. David Gibson, of Temple, TX; two granddaughters, Jessie Oestreich & husband Keith, of Troy, TX; and Dr. Alli Wolfe & husband James, of Waco, TX; five great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Alaina Oestreich, James "Judge" Ryker, and Sophie Louise Wolfe; sister-in-law, Donna Schumann, of Milwaukee, WI; and other family and friends.
