    some may disagree but you wont go far wrong with an sdr play rsp1a the cheap one (£100 ish) JUST DON'T TRANSMIT NEAR IT ! as the one I have clearly states when you open it great tool and better by far than any cheaper sdr dongles but as has been said before more wire in the air and further away will help

    I have an RSP1A also, just for fun. Didn't need it for anything, but it's a cool toy.

    Antenna is everything with all of these.

    Getting an antenna "outside," and "as far away from the house as possible" goes a long way towards improving S/N.

    If I attach a 30' wire inside my house or on my patio to the RSP1A, it sucks. But if I attach my actual ham antennas (transmitting antennas) to it, it's pretty remarkable. A lot of performance in something that weighs an ounce or two!
