Why do hams refer to themselves as WE instead of I?

    I find it interesting that WE hams, masters of efficient and accurate communications, often refer to ourselves
    as WE instead of I.

    How long has this practice been common and does anybody know where/when it originated?

    It reminds US of the CB radio trucker dialect from the 1970s, such as:
    "You've got the BIG BOPPER here on 19, WE just spotted a smokey near mile marker 123
    and he's fishin' for some big bass.

    Also, if WE refer to ourselves as WE, why don't WE refer to the other person in a QSO as THEY?

    I always thought that this was indicative of a multiple personality disorder, and I always wanted to be clear of which personality had the license, and what personalities were technically 3rd party traffic.

    I hate it when the voices in my head go silent. I never know what they are planning.
