Thank you Tom N4GRF for commenting about may Social Capital (Great Disruption) post.
Another factor that may be making young people unwilling to join anything or volunteer for anything may be their fears of having to serve as soldiers. Those who volunteered to join the National Guard and wound up in Afghanistan or Iraq, so that the rest of their generation could avoid a draft are brave people, but there are also many who don't want to fight a war for many reasons that don't all belong in this thread, or simply because they don't have to.
Another factor is that kids want to play computer games, which they think are realistic enough, when played alone. They don't want to join the Boy Scouts or the Civil Air Patrol, because they can play soldier or pilot alone with reaistic virtual reality software
on their PCs. They don't want to join any quasi military malitia group, but would rather play solo. They can fire all sorts of weapons at game targets, without committing themselves to fight real wars or exposing themselves to peer pressure. After Viet Nam, lots of folks have been wondering how the present war will go down in future history books. Many people don't want to be terrorized by being soldiers and would rather take the much smaller risk of being terrorized at home. Too bad that President Bush didn't look for WMDs on a computer game monitor.

    Enuf sed,

poll members??? sure but the real key and the only way the arrl will get to a size with clout is to poll and know the non member hams-- that of course is where the new prospects come frome!!!!! The arrl needs to grow much larger to truly represent a group in a "cloutful" way---

The ARRL represents its inner circle. Let's face it, the ARRL cares about the ARRL period.
