Vx-6r it is! I can't see the ssb option working very well without an antenna much longer than the attachable one available. I was most interested in the 3 bands of vhf/UHF and weather. The dual receive would have been nice but I really don't think I will miss it. $219 for radio from gigaparts . Also 12 volt charger, diamond antenna, soft case, and waterproof mic/speaker for less than the kenwood alone.

Your antenna has no bearing on the mode that I ever heard of. A rubber duck will radiate equally poorly in all directions whether it's sending FM or SSB.

Unless I'm missing something here the th-f6a doesn't transmit in anything but fm. I was referring to the previous post about receiving hf transmissions in ssb. I'm pretty sure the rubber duck antenna wouldn't be the best choice to receive 160 meter ssb transmissions.
