Which antenna do you think would work best on a compact car for 2M mobile?
    1) 1/4 magnet mount on top the car.
    2) 5/8 grounded mount on the trunk lid.

You might want to read this: http://www.k0bg.com/images/pdf/mobile_vhf_ant.pdf It was written by Danny Richardson, K6MHE, for CQ I think it was, some years ago. It turns out that placement is more important than the type of antenna.

If you want the best performance out of whatever you buy, drilling a hole, and using an NMO mount, will always be better than a mag mount, all else being equal.

The quarterwave will have a more consistent 360deg pattern, with higher take off angle useful in hilly country or urban canyons where the repeaters are up high.

The 5/8 may be somewhat directional but will be stronger in those directions. It will have a lower take off angle helpful for distance, not taking into account any tilt from vertical due to slope of the trunk.

Personally, I use a 1/4L for stealth around town, and the 5/8 when travelling
