There are lotsa good HF rigs for well under $400! In fact, I scored a working Heathkit HW-101 for $20, and many more donated to me. Most recently, a Kenwood TS-830S that will be used on our upcoming Field Day. Our Club prez had a Kenwood TS-520 donated to the club too.

So rigs are plentiful and cheap. But I would suggest paying a few extra bucks to get one with DUAL VFOs, as at some time you are going to want to work the frequent DXpedtions out there and they are split freq.

Nab a G5RV and get it up as high as U can. Shoot an arrow over a tree nearby and string it up. That will give U all bands and will suffice until you can get up a tower and Tribander.

HF is very exciting and highly entertaining. WELL worth your effort to explore it!
