    Thanks

ICOM, Yaesu, and Kenwood are Japanese. So are Alinco and JRC.

Ten Tec, Elecraft, and Flex are American.

Many American companies offer radios that can be built from kits, including Small Wonder Labs and DZKit in Loveland CO, which has a complex SSB rig as a kit. I am not aware of any good two meter FM rigs available as a kit.

    I believe Jetstream is Taiwanese.

Most of what's left is Chinese. There are many very cheap FM handy talkies on the market from there, now. Caveat Emptor - I believe you get what you pay for, and one of the 'big three' Japanese companies will sell you a really good HT for just a little bit more than these knockoffs.

In the old days, there were many American companies that built ham gear, Hammarlund, Hallicrafters, Swan, Drake, Collins, Heathkit, and many others.
