Back in 1957 I got a S38D Hallicrafters rcvr for SWL Hobby, at age 12. I studied for the next 4 years and got the Novice ticket.
I added the Heathkit Q-multiplier to the rcvr and built a few tube transmitters from junk parts and finally, in August of 1961, got the single 6AQ5 Xtal osc to work well enough to get airborne on 80 M.
I learned a lot about electronics and radio getting my station working.
I had a few old photos of the original set up but they are long gone now.

No pictures available from novice days but first shack included:

Hallicrafters HT-40 transmitter (used from Allied in Chicago)
    Hallicrafters S-120 swl receiver
    Gotham vertical antenna :)
    Basic hand key

True starter set up but great fun. Still remember first contact on 80 meters cw with W9BUG!

HW 16. Fourty meter dipole. My bedroom. 1973. Believe I was 13 or so. Lousy build by me.
