Three projects in descending order of complexity which may offer you "The Challenge".

A google search will find enough detail on each to get started with your reading/research.

Join the yahoo groups to fnd the dedicated builders.

I'm currently setting up to have a go at the QRP2004.

Go to eBay and search the full description for "TUBE RADIO BUZ*". You will invariably find a few old "All American 5" radios where the seller has stated something like, "when turned on, the radio makes a buzzing sound, but does not pick up any stations." Find one you like, and buy it.

Then, go through and replace as many capacitors as you can. (There might be a few buried in some inaccessible spot, which you can probably get away with leaving.) In particular, you'll need to replace the electrolytic filter capacitors. If you find some 47 uF ones rated at 150 volts or more, they will probably work fine for any in that order of magnitude.

When you're finished, plug it in, and it will pick up stations, but will not make a buzzing sound. :D
