I have used everything from ribbon BC microphones to studio condenser mics like the Mogami with internal tube. I have some great studio/radio dynamic mics from Turner (the broadcast 500 series).

For me, I found $9.00 Chinese computer electret mics with 30hz to 15k response. They work great on my IC-7300 and my FTDX 3000.

I've only used stock or stock replacements (MC-60). I've never had bad reports with them
I'd like to try something from Heil in the future

I use the hand mic that came with my 7300. It's my favorite b/c I don't have any other mics :)

The bar of expectations of audio quality is only a couple cm above ground in mainstream amateur radio. I hear stations transmitting with scratchy, distorted, tinny audio that irritates the ear like someone running their fingernail across a blackboard, but others in the QSO give him a signal report: "You sound good" or even "Excellent audio quality".

Just whatever I have around, which usually means the stock mic or whatever.....
I'm not picky, just give me a mic that works.

I like any mike with no proximity effect. EV 664 and RE20 are good examples. When you work it at various distances, only the level changes, not the frequency response. Mikes with proximity effect sound thin unless you work then close.

Ahhhh the crystal cartridge. Is the mike a pill shaped mike?
