I have a few WEB contacts listed on my page who I have not had the pleasure of a QSO with but would like me to visit their member page and list myself on their WEB contacts. What is the purpose of this and is it potentially harmful?

Signing "Web contact logs" is not harmful at all.

When you visit the "Web contact log" of subscriber member's page, and you will see the comment that says...
The Web Contact Log is a simple visitor log where hams who visit this page can sign your listing with a quick "hello". To see the comments on your page, go to your callsign and click on the Edit Record button. Then, choose Manage My Contact Logs.

Well, but the "Edit Record button" is no longer present on the page.
So, to see the comments on your page, go to your call sign "WO1B" displayed at the top right of the page, and click on the "Edit WO1B" menu in the case of you. Then chose " Manage your Web Contact Logs". This is one of the correct ways.

    Hope this helps you...have fun!
