    Michael W. Whitmore, WB8ONY SK

Michael W. Whitmore, 67, of Holiday, Florida, formerly of Nelsonville, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017, at his residence.
Born Feb. 12, 1950, at Sheltering Arms Hospital in Athens, he was the son of the late Warren and Lois Whitmore of Nelsonville.
Michael was a loving husband and a proud father. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Karen; his son, Jonathan of Somerville, Massachusetts; and his sister, Patricia Cain of Athens, along with several in-laws, five nephews and one niece.
Michael graduated from Buchtel-York High School in 1967. During his high school years, he was a member of the local Civil Air Patrol. He received a degree in electronics from a technical school in Akron in 1969 as well as a certification from Hocking College. He returned to Athens and worked for the engineering department of the telecommunications center of Ohio University for 10 years. He provided transmitter support for the broadcast facility of WOUB-TV and Radio. He strove for excellence in his professional career and achieved the highly-valued level of FCC First Class Radiotelephone License.
In 1979, Michael and his family relocated to Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida, to join the engineering staff of WTSP-TV (Channel 10) as their transmitter supervisor. He retired from WTSP-TV in 2008 after 29 years of service.
Michael (WB8ONY) was an avid amateur (ham) radio operator and an active member and officer of the Suncoast Amateur Radio Club of New Port Richey, Florida.
