Walter E. Hercher, W7JZN SK Walter E. 'Terry' Hercher July 26, 1926 - Dec. 25, 2020 Walter Emil "Terry" Hercher passed away at age 94 in his home surrounded by his children and family on Christmas Day, 2020. Terry was born to Walter and Florence Hercher July 26, 1926, in Roseburg and was raised on a produce farm in nearby Dillard. He graduated from Roseburg High School in 1944, served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 through 1945, and graduated from Oregon State College in 1950 with a degree in electrical engineering. He married the sole love of his life, Shirley Ann Helweg, June 29, 1952. She passed away April 4, 2020, just shy of their 68th wedding anniversary. His career was spent working for Pacific Power & Light Company from 1953 until his retirement as regional power superintendent in 1988. In retirement, he delivered Meals on Wheels, developed hobbies, and invested time and talents in his family and community. His hobbies, which he shared with his children and grandchildren, included fishing, sailing, ham radio, and raising the best home-grown tomatoes. Terry and Shirley lived in Medford from 1953 through 1975 and in the Raleigh Hills area of Portland from 1975. He was completely devoted to his wife, four children, six grandchildren, and great-granddaughter. He was an earnest Christian and a member of Valley Community Presbyterian Church in Portland since 1975, where he was active in facilities planning and management and other committees and groups. He received Valley's Man of the Year award in 2006. He was a man of the highest character and commitment to God, family, friendships and the community. He leaves a legacy of love, loyalty, and faith. Terry was preceded in death by Shirley Ann. He is survived by his brother, Robert Hercher; children, David (Alicia) Hercher, Steven (Hana) Hercher, Ann (Andrew) Tsen, and John (Wendi) Hercher; grandchildren, Laura, Jachym, Andrew, Elizabeth, Joshua, and Katherine; and great-granddaughter, Mia. The family suggests memorial donations to Meals on Wheels or Valley Community Presbyterian Church.
