Hope U all know about this. It is happening RIGHT NOW, so, unless U have a SR-71 Blackbird to get here to VISALIA, CA, U are too late!
Visalia is as DXish as U can get. Loads of Programs about all the major DXpeditions this year (ST0R, T32C, HK0NA, T2T to name a few)
The top DXers from around the world have gathered here. And, over FORTY THOUSAND dollars in Prizes, far exceeding Dayton! I need to take home the FTdx5000 that is one of the main prizes.

They have a real live FTdx5000 on the air as I type. Look for K6V, special event station from the Hotel here, on the bands.

My good wife is going on the Tour of the Visalia area on a big luxury bus.

Well, gotta go sign off and get back to the programs!!!

Kenwood didn't show up. So nothing about that. They are firm on the Dayton Debut. 1 month to go!

My good wife went on the Ladies Local tour and had a wonderful time. I was busy checking Cards much of the day, and socializing with all the fine Hams I know here. I scored a new Hat, Green with a tan leather brim and yellow lettering. Green Hats are greatly significant to Chinese, so it was of great concern to my wife. When a Chinese person's spouse wears a green hat, that means the spouse is............. Well, this IS QRZed so I can't say too much, but the spouse is messing around! Guess she better watch me around Phoebe and Penelope!

Anyway, we both went to the Banquet, and the food was OK, but there was WAY too much yakyakyak and the night dragged on and on. She went back to the room as did I, so we missed the ST0R program and the prize drawing. Will find out this morning if I won anything, but think I have better odds in the Lottery. I bought $60 worth of tickets, but some high rollers here buy $1000 worth!!!! But then, they can take home a $6000 radio if they win. I have just MISERABLE luck! I should taken a pic of the prize drum. There must be a MILLION tickets in it!!!! So my 60 are pretty much lost in there. If only I had scored some SYRUP and coated each ticket with it so it would stick to the drawers fingers when they reached inside! OH, how I NEED that FTdx5000!!!! Out of the 700+ attendees, I need it the WORST!!!!

We have about an hour or so till the Sunday morning breakfast. I need to pack up the car so we can RACE out of town once the final prized drawing concludes at around 11AM. Then, it will be 5 hours back to San Diego. We need to go to CHURCH this evening so no delays are possible. Can't miss Church under ANY circumstances! Just wish I had a nice radio in the trunk to be Thankful for.

Visalia is a WONDERFUL convention and I have my hotel room all reserved for next year. The RBs raised the price though. Up to $120 a night plus room tax! Nice room though, but for $120 it SHOULD be!!!

I had a good time EXCEPT I didn't win a DOGGONE THING!!! I was actually PRAYING with my hands clasped, begging in TEARS when the had the drawing for the FTdx5000, but it did NO GOOD!!!!

Someone with a call like NE6U won it. He probably already has THREE of them! In fact, all the big rig winners didn't need them.
I DO!!!! But, in drawings, NEED is NEVER EVER a factor. ONLY LUCK is, and I have ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE LUCK!!!!

    That's not true Pat..
Remember you won that VHF antenna after yours got struck by lightning.

I was at Visalia many years ago. The big prize was a KT-34. The guy whose ticket was drawn was the owner of KLM, the company that made them! He graciously had them draw another number.

I have a suggestion for you, Pat. Next year take Kenny, WA6BCC with you. He has won more prizes on raffles, door prizes, etc. than anyone I ever heard of. Back when I was Secretary of SANDRA, he won something every meeting for two years or so, sometimes several items at one meeting! Maybe you can partner up or something.

Visalia is on my list of future trips. I have been meaning to make it to Long Beach to visit a couple of my friends that moved there and it would be fun to operate W6RO at least once.

    Pat,

Not sure how you missed Kenwood but they were there, right next to Yaesu in the big vendor room, in the far back corner. No word on the new Kenwood however as I even tried to pry a sneak peak from the rep. I even offered him a few incentive 'greens' but no go. All he would confirm is the size, slightly bigger than the TS950SDX and will have a price tag that will clean out a $6K bank account. Since I'm not as ambitious as Pat, I'll not be going to Dayton and will wait for the word on the new rig like the rest of hamdom!

How'd you swing getting a room already for next year? I suspect you're not staying in the Holiday Inn since they won't do room under the convention pricing until early 2013.

Had a blast at the convention but alas, came home empty handed from the prize drawings. I did however get my usual load of goodies and supplies from Jim N6DHZ and The DX Store.

    Already planning next year's trip.

I have heard that many of the BIG winners at Visalia drop a cool $1K or more on raffle tickets. With that sort of odds in your favor, winning seems to happen easier I would think. I usually drop $200-300 on raffle tickets and have won a fair share of goodies over the last 8 years. Last year, I made off with the Pixel Pro-1B Magnetic Loop RX antenna, retails for around $300 so I got my moneys worth. Couple years before that, I won two (2) hanks of copper antenna wire totalling 150' so that wire is up on the wall and will not be used for any old antenna but something appropriate since it cost me around $2-3 a foot :)

A ham from merry ol' England won the Honda 2000 generator this year. Not sure how he plans on getting it home. Another fly-in ham won the big Yeasu Rotor. Probably cost him half as much as a new one just for excess baggage fees. My traveling buddy won the 'not even released yet' Alpha 4040 4Kw automatic antenna tuner main prize this year. He plans on selling it and buying an amp and tuner with the proceeds.

I was selling tickets one year (San Diego DX CLub has duties on the SOUTH year) and I sold $600 worth to one person Another Ham sold $1000 worth to a couple of high rollers. $1000 is chicken feed for some of these ULTRA WEALTHY Hams. They spend that on LUNCH! And, with that kind of dollars dropped, they do have great success at winning! This year, they had an Icom IC-7700 AND a Yaesu FTdx5000, Plus some cheaper rigs like an Icom IC-718 and Yaesu FT-450. As I said, something like $45 THOUSAND dollars in prizes from Vislaia! Far exceeding all the rest of the Hamfests and Conventions combined! (including DAYTON!)

How many tickets do they sell, Pat? Those prizes are donated usually, are they not?

It isn't surprising. Everyone knows that DXers are taller, smarter, richer and better looking than other hams, and true blue, too. Stand tall, and be deserving!
