The signal to noise ratio is one of the most commonly used ways of specifying the noise performance or sensitivity of a radio receiver. Noise generated within the receiver is what limits its sensitivity and not the amount of gain available. This means that measuring the signal to noise ratio for a signal of a given strength is a good way of determining the sensitivity. The signal to noise ratio, SNR method of specifying receiver sensitivity is most commonly used for HF radios, although it is equally applicable to other types of radio as well.
