OK - just received a nice Champion bug. I can't seem to figure out how to make it work with my 7300. I think I have it wired orrectly - dit to red, dah to white. When I have it wired like this there is no sound at all from the radio. If I put the shield on either wiring post it does send a signal, but it is dits on both sides of the paddle.

I have the 7300 set for paddle but no other changes. What am I missing?

    Thanks, KN4CQB

Set the rig up as a straight key.

Your Champion bug is nothing more than a straight key on steroids.

Set everything to 'key' and it should work fine.

    Polarity doesn't matter.

Thanks all - changed to straight key - now I get a tone as long as I hold the paddle - it either direction...

You have to adjust it properly.

Also, the grounded wire to the rig should go to the bug terminal that is not insulated.

There are some very good videos on YouTube addressing this.

OP: please read this before going any further with your bug. Your bug must be properly adjusted or your CW is likely to be very hard to read!

I know it's a bit of a read. But once you've used a bug that is set up correctly, you will be able to quickly and easily make adjustments by ear.

And anyway, most bugs will send good CW in a range of speeds, so adjustment is usually only necessary if a large change of speed is undertaken.

I've have sustained a serious injury by restraining myself from posting what I'd like to on this thread. I suspect I'm not alone...
