MFJ power meters are fine for use in non-quantitative measurements (where you just wanna see a meter move) - and the prices are affordable, too. That's all amateurs really need, unless you're right up against that legal limit mark .... then I'd recommend an NIST traceable instrument. And while you're borrowing that NIST power meter (who can afford to buy one?) you can "calibrate" your MFJ stuff!! PS - Now, Jason, you just let him troll you!!
I'm quite happy with my 40 year old Telewave model 44. Its range is 20 - 1000 MHZ. Power reading selections are 5, 15, 50, 150 and 500 watts. A couple of years ago I contacted Telewave in Calif. I wanted some tech info and all they were interested was in selling me a new one! Not my idea of customer service.
