About those Q-codes, don't worry so much. I'd discourage their use on FM, but if a few slip out, it's no big deal.
You'll hear some commonly used ones. Like I tell my kids about swear words, just because you hear them, doesn't mean you need to repeat them to sound cool, but it's still not a bad idea to know what they mean, so you'll know what people are saying.
So listen a lot. When you hear something you don't understand, look it up, or ask for clarification. And speak in normal English as much as possible.
