    Group,

Came across an article from CQ April 1961 written by Charles Reed regarding a number of mods to the Hammarlund Super Pro series. The end result of the modifications is a receiver with a built in power supply, product detector, cascode first stage RF, grounded grid second stage RF, antenna trimmer, IF gain control, and new audio stage.

Has anyone in the forum experience with these modifications ?

I have a BC779 in original working condition and a SP400X that I have "messed with" for many years.

I'm considering some changes to the SP400X only.

How about providing a link to the magazine?

There's some great stuff on BAMA, too.

I have a paper copy of the article that I bought from CQ magazine in the past. It looks like you can get them online but have to pay some.

I had one of these SP-110 receivers that had been modified in these ways, with cascode RF and a
    four-crystal SSB lattice filter.

Some modifications were beneficial, but removing the p-p 6F6 audio
stage in favour of a single 6V6 did not help much.

A lot of the appeal of the Super-Pro lies in its audio chain.

The ultimate SuperPRO conversion is to make it all solid-state.:)

    WB2WIK,

Do you have any solid state circuit idea's for the conversion?

    1. Remove SP400 innards
    2. Bolt IC-7300 to SP400 interior faceplate.
    3. Conversion complete.

Why? Enjoy the old radios for what they are, rather than destructively turning them into frankensteins... :) bill

    Absolutely!

What I'd do is get a Drake R-7, then strip out everything inside the SuperPRO and install the R7 inside, but using the original SuperPRO knob to keep it authentic.:)
