Thanks for the reminder, Eric! Just bought my ticket. Had TONS of new info from last session, Dave W7DGJ
Will be at a hamfest/flea that weekend. Cutting back internet virtual activities in favor of real ones Too much time on the screen and not enough real life;-)
Hi Chip - Hope you are well. Just a note that the QSO Today event is accessible for a whole month . . . last few times, there was too much content for me to review "live" as it happened during the weekend, but I was REALLY getting into going through the presentations over the following few weeks. Dave, W7DGJ
It seems like MR W1YW has forgotten that there is a world outside the US. A world with very few events like those you have "over there". For us and we are many that appreciate having an opportunity to participate and share on Internet. Of course I and probably most others on this side of the pond would prefer to visit those live events you have there. But except if you are millionaire we can't due to cost. Maybe that could be worth thinking about before picking on Internet events
No, I didn't forget anything. And I suspect Swedes don't live in caves, and actually have the propensity of face to face, even at low cost! Too many people are now living on the internet. It's time to get 'out there' again. I think deeply and constantly. My comment is hardly unique to me. And that is why I posted it. I am happy you find value in this video activity. However, for many folks post-COVID, the desire for HUMAN CONTACT exceeds the vicarious effort of vicarious video links. We need to ,ON OCCASION, just turn off the computer and get 'out there'. A mix is fine, but a singular habit enforced by COVID is best reviewed and assessed. By you. BY me. By EACH of us. Get out there and be social. Enjoy the videos if you want, but dont forget the face to face. That's the message. It has nothing to do with money or Americans. It has to do with being a human. Enjoy your day. 73 Chip W1YW
Chip - I am very happy that you have decided after over 12,000 posts on QRZ that you need to get off your computer for real face to face human contact. I don't understand why you have to troll my post and degrade my efforts because you don't support it. You have never come to a QSO Today event or supported the QSO Today project in any way. You have no dog in this hunt. Why say anything here?
That is certainly a key driver...essentially its not an 'event' but an archival activity. Unlike past 4Z1UG 'events', this one has a few talks I'd like to catch, and the archival aspect makes it appealing, given a face to face conflict for the real -time aspect. I am ignoring the (irrelevant negative) comments which didn't catch my meaning--unlike yours, which did. 73 Chip W1YW
Don't support it? Nope that's not the case. You missed my very face to face banquet talk at the New England Convention last week. But I had to use a computer...powerpoint you know. Been a while since I used vu graphs... chalk board perhaps? Glad you were happy with a face to face event. Lots of people enjoying each others company, post COVID. No camera needed. Maybe you had an 'about face' on face to face events? Thw archival aspect indeed 'throws the dog a bone'. Helps differentiate. I will be on board this one--post real time.
Eric @4Z1UG, Does your unusually dour tone toward commentary on this thread reflect feelings in regards to this troubling situation alleged on another social media outlet? Also being discussed on this QRZ thread. Best wishes and 73, John, WØPV Abraxas3d W5NYV@abraxas3d@mastodon.radio There's something that's happened recently over at the #arrl, which is the national #hamradio organization for the USA. ARRL identified, by name, clubs and organizations that produce educational videos as "being in competition with" the ARRL "Learning Center". ARRL then retaliated against these clubs and organizations, calling them up and stating that these organizations *would be excluded from ARRL publications and partnerships* Firsthand, #qsotoday and #ratpac are affected. This is bad. Sep 02, 2023, 10:23 · · 55 · 49
RE: ARRL, and Eric's stuff...Just to be clear, I have NO 'dog' in this passion play... I expect to be watching Eric's videos after the fact, because I am out doing face to face this next weekend (at least part of it). I applaude all efforts to enhance the knowledge base of hams. I do not applaude being made a villain for no reason, which,IMO, was Eric's intent..
This isn't the place for the ARRL vs. Other Educators drama, but it is indeed real and should be a topic of conversation. I suggest you put a QRZ forums post up about the topic and we'll all dive in. Dave, W7DGJ
My post was an illustrated question to Eric attempting to understand or explain the IMO ardent and unfortuately personalized rebuttal to a pointed comment that I also feel is very valid, ie, too much time is being spent by hams watching (and making) online videos versus real-time face-to-face exchanges or especially, performing live unautomated OTA activities. I don't disagree that this thread is not the place to discuss the ARRL vs Other Educators topic. I am comfortable with using another thread, link cited previously, titled Conflict of Interest started by @NN4RH in QRZ Ham Radio Discussions. That started with discussion of other recent ARRL executive action regarding the publishing of potentially competitive educational materials, which now has received new life with this latest alleged action involving the trendsetting QSO Today project and others.
QSO Today Academy has a place at the instructional table, just like dozens of other for profit and non profit enterprises. I prefer face to face for the reasons stated. Some do not. ANd that's ok. My gentle chide to 'get back out there' was simply that. 73 Chip W1YW
