So went through all the steps got verified, went great. However last night the phone went belly up during an OS update and had to wipe the phone and start over. I have re-loaded google's authenticator but can't add the QRZ account because I don't have a code and when I go into my QRZ account to disable two factor and re-setup it won't let me do that without a code which I can't get...

I bought a new phone yesterday and face a similar condition. Other sites where I use Google's two factor auth will either display the QR code or give me the key id so I can install on my new phone. Yes, you have to redo each account separately. No way to just move all of them over from the old phone. Replying to this so I can get notified when an answer is provided.

Thx. Found a link to open a ticket and they helped me resolve it. From here on I'll use SMS for two factor.

Same here. When you lose the authentication app, you can’t log on to reset the 2 step authentication as QRZ wont let you log in without the code! I suppose this makes sense from a security point of view but it is frustrating.

To be fair QRZ support were very quick to remove my 2 step authentication so I could log in after raising a ticket but I really don’t understand why 2 step authentication is needed unless you’re doing something serious like on line banking. Even most email providers don’t require 2 step verification.

I know you can use QRZ without 2 step authentication but my account settings page was prompting me to verify my identity and it seems you have to set up 2 step authentication to do this.

I think I might just keep logs the good old fashioned way (i.e paper or a spreadsheet which I have some control over). I don’t have to waste lots of time ‘verifying’ every QSO I make either (then again I’m not into contests!). I know QRZ do provide some useful tools but I don’t think I can justify paying for a subscription again just so I can download all my QSO’s as a spreadsheet. Each to their own I guess but I hope this will be seen as a constructive criticism..

Thanks for sharing! Sounds like 2FA can be a pain.

Authy is a 2FA app similar to Google Authenticator, but it can be restored onto a new phone from the cloud, using a backup password and a code sent to your registered phone number. Authy is much more convenient. I read that the latest Google Auth app now has a similar backup and restore capability too.

2FA with an SMS code is much better than no 2FA, but SMS is vulnerable to dedicated attackers familiar enough with SS7 to exploit it. It has been done before.

There's no longer a need to use 2FA on this site. Just disable it.

This is bad advce. One should use 2FA everywhere that you can, especially in places associated with your real identity. Even if no financial data is at risk, this is just best practice.
