“The TS-950SD (Digital) was aimed at the most performance-minded segment of the Amateur Radio transceiver market: serious contesters and DXers.” (QST review - 1991). Equipped with the DSP-100, dual VFO’s, two independent receivers, 5 crystal filters, two noise blankers, VBT, etc, it was the top of the line for Kenwood with a suggested retail price of $4400* in 1991. (*QST review)

Fast forward 26 years - This rig is still considered a legitimate powerhouse in performance. To fully describe its capabilities, features, it’s strengths and weaknesses, AF5CC, wrote a review that was published on November 15, 2017 and can be found at www.eham.net/reviews/review/149753.

All functions and options are working on receive and transmit. Great transmit audio reports and this radio’s audio is easy to listen to…even with the built-in speaker. Have not checked for AM, FSK (RTTY) or FM transmit output. On CW and SSB, it was loafing at a key down output power of 120 watts on the Drake wattmeter taken on 40 M. The rig’s power output LED meter showing approximately 150 watts output was taken on 20 M. (pictures available)

RE: The filter complement. ALL of the Kenwood filters (5) that were sold with the 950SD are in place on this rig. Important? Only if you don’t want to spend an extra $100 per filter if someone has removed them to sell separately.

The Ops Manual, Section 4-7, covers the receive and transmit functions that can be controlled by a PC with your favorite CAT software; see the HL5FEE YouTube: “TS-950SD WITH POWERSDR IF STAGE”.

Aside from a few minor scuffs on portions of the case that are typically not seen, the only cosmetic issue that is keeping it from receiving an “extra special” designation for cosmetics are scrapes on the top front edge of the front panel bezel. These scrapes are not noticeable when operating or looking at the radio at normal viewing angles. That’s the way the radio came to me. If the new owner wants cosmetic perfection, some 1500 grit sandpaper, Novus #17 and #1 and a couple of hours of elbow grease could eliminate many of the scrapes which would otherwise not be seen.

This rig comes with an original Kenwood TS-950S Digital Instruction (Operation) Manual and Kenwood hand mic.

$990 includes the rig, mic, ops manual, shipping and insurance to lower 48
