THE BIGGEST EVENT in ham radio is happening every day, it's called POTA. PARKS ON THE AIR Representing ham radio 365 days a year!!
I'm amazed at the popularity and laid back way of POTA! But at times it appears the POTA folks are having WAY to much fun! THIS MUST STOP!
Many are regulars and from my observations and vantage point I'd say having as much fun as ANY of the FD operators, probably even more enthusiasm!!
There is no wondering why. The hobby got a dusty picture of itself in the public. Here in Germany its much more, than in America. In the end of the 1990s the technology changed, operators didnt. The best fresh example is the new ICOM ID-5200A/E. Here you will find much similar things to the Yaesu FTM-400. Of cause the new generation of devices will be much better. But the operators said that they didnt like things like the FTM-400. The future was open but nobody wanted to get there. The FTM-400 was no HAM-radio, it was an internet application for many. That was a big fault to think in that way. Did this opinion changed? I dont know. Personaly I go my way with new technology and its got very small today. For people who like it big, partly deaf with much power consumption, it will stay wrong.
THE BIGGEST EVENT in ham radio is happening every day, it's called getting on the air. Get on the air, try stuff that is new, hone skills and most importantly learn CW. Representing ham radio 365 days a year!! Dam it feels good to be a CW operator.
HAM-radio is not about CW and SSB. Its about communication and its steady changing. The Internet showed the same. From bulletinboards, to text chat, AOL chat, ICQ to WhatsApp. The bulletinboards and others are out of style, the people stood and moved. And yes to see it that way, is much to simpel. There is much more. HAM-radio changed within itself but couldnt get the people partly to get with. And the loud crowd of people who are crying, are the people from former times. There were all was well, when looking back. When give it a reality check, the picture will change. HAM-radio is over when the people want to keep it in the past.
Amateur Radio like everything else in this world changes constantly. Remember when Sideband came on board, those old AM fellas hated it but eventually saw the light and QSLing, remember when you sent a card to a contact, now you have 17 ways to confirm a call and the all have their own "awards". Things change. Get use to it.
