    About the Project

    Hi - I’m Glenn, NØIDX.

I’ve had fun bringing IDXA T-shirts to market and designing a circular feed dish for AO-40, but my latest project is TalkBack Pro—a device that I believe will change the way all amateur radios are designed. For decades, radios have lacked a vital feature: the ability to truly hear your transmitted audio in real time, exactly as it goes out on the air.

As a DXer with over 40 years of experience, I’ve always wanted to hear my actual transmit audio. Some modern radios, like my FTDX-5000MP, have this with a MONI button, but many classics (like the FT-857D) do not. When you transmit, you’re essentially “deaf” to your own audio—you have no way to know how you sound on the air. TalkBack Pro fills this gap.

Plugged into your rig, TalkBack Pro lets you hear your processed audio in your headphones, just as others hear it. Instantly monitor mic gain, processor levels, proximity effect, and more—no more guesswork, no more “blind” on-air checks or expensive monitors. It’s USB powered and compatible with most radios featuring an ACC or similar port, and of course, it’s tailor-made for my own FT-857D.

This is not a cheap toy. I’ve partnered with a professional electrical engineer, designed a custom PCB, and developed a tough, high-quality 3D printed enclosure using premium materials. Every unit will be hand-checked by me here in the USA.

Production starts in June—get on board at Kickstarter when we launch!

    Benefits
    · No more “blind” transmissions or on-air complaints
    · Adjust your audio chain in real time—see, hear, and fix problems instantly
    · Ideal for POTA, SOTA, contesters, DXpeditions, and any ham who cares about quality audio
    · Lightweight, durable, and built for the field—no offshore junk

Thanks for supporting real innovation by real hams.

This is a great idea. I really would like to know how I hear when I make a QSO.

    Hi.

    Great idea...

    A couple of product suggestions:

    1) Create this unit with a single automatic Voice Keyer (20-30 second recorder) similar to the the MFJ-434B, so I can record my voice in HD audio, key up and play. Better than calling CQ endlessly.
    2) You need an good internal battery which would be user replaceable. Too many cords.

Good luck! I'll be watching. I could be a beta tester, as well.

It is a flexable design. You can use an Amazon Y-cable and split the acc 6 pin din for digital use. This is a "Patent Pending" design files in USTPO.

Good idea. For now uses usb to power the unit. Very low draw. You could use a battery pack to make it packable.

An internal battery with easy access would be a major plus - alkaline cells or rechargeables.

What about the microphone feedback loop from the speaker?

    :)

Yes you get audio the same way as the big rigs, you have to adjust any feedback out accordingly.

Then it would be difficult to do in real-time.

Have it record audio in HD (high sampling rate) until the TX is complete. Then enable it to play back.

Yes, these plugs will be included in future porduction runs. Everything depends on demand at this point.

So this isn’t demodulating RF? It is going between your microphone and your transmitter?

If it only monitors between transmitter and microphone, then it really is a microphone checker with no feedback as to how your transmitter's circuitry is modifying audio.

Nice mini condenser mic "checker." It reminds me of headset monitor amplifiers used in professional audio mixer boards. Separate monitor level controls independent of mic output level. But, if you want to use with both magnetic and condensers, you'll need isolation and probably amplification for dynamic elements. Major difference in mic output levels as well......

Also, no USB port connection or cable with USB plug.

RJ-45 jack would be where? Not shown in photo.
