Why did QRZ have to rebrand a radio with their name on it. QRZ-1? A Chinese rebranded TYT TH-UV88 dual band.

why could they just give them a tyt branded radio...so if the radio says qrz-1 does that mean it is superior to other brands or is it the same junk that is already out there......

You want to get people involved in ham radio make the license for free for kids under 16 yrs of age and for kids over 16-21 make it half priced...giving them shinny trinkets or incentives is not going to ensure they get involved or stay involved...I dont think people get into the hobby just for a rebranded cheap Chinese radio.

Within six months for me. I was over the 30 days when I found out about this deal but they sent me my radio without issue. And it is a good handheld.

May be I should try and submit for it. I passed the technician in 2-5-2023. I did just find out about it yesterday.

Actually I am in the process of negotiating a comprehensive recruitment campaign with the ARRL about this exact matter.
There are ways to attract younger people to the hobby. AND active ham retention is addressed too.
    The 'Reader's Digest condensed version'

ARRL could train an individual (Perhaps One for two for each ARRL Section) well equipped with videos, leaflets, demo equipment, Kinda Like a PIO to travel and visit local schools, universities, church organizations, fraternal organizations (ie. Masons, IOOF), Farm Bureau organizations, BSA, JCC, FAA , Local astronomy club, local RC/Drone club, Military bases, Local Aero club, YMCA, Boys/Girls Club, Local Gun Club, Police/Fire/EMS organization,City-County-state EMO, Local Volunteer fire departments, Local TV station..... and demonstrate the practicality and fun side of ham radio. A well trained and well liked person.
    Well, I know people!
Every club has a Electronic engineer, Every club has a "know it all", Every club has a "I'm an Extra Class, I'm the best", Every club has the "well rounded man or woman" , Every club has a member that just rubs folks the wrong way. Every club has a member that wants to be king. You know who I am talking about, I know your sitting there right now going, "Yep, We have one or two of those guys" Every club has at least one of each of these people.
The correct person for this job is crucial to this first few minutes of introduction. This requires a skillful careful selection process.
The prospect need to be in touch with the "Well rounded man or woman" First impressions are EVERYTHING!
So, this may not be politically correct but.....
Say the ARRL allows for two persons for each ARRL section, Know the demographics of where your target area is.
Example, Perhaps it's a Boy Scout camporee then the ARRL reps should be male. Or local Girls Club in which case reps should be females.
A local civic organization in the Hispanic or black community, The rep should be black or hispanic. It's not racist, Don't even go down that road. It's a fact that people like interacting with others that are like them. A school organization you would want at least one of the reps to be a teenager that can articulate to their own (other students) Perhaps both a female and a male. You get where I'm going with this.
Keep politics, Income class, race and religion out of the interactions and meetings.
I personally have dropped my club membership from two clubs over my 30+ years as a ham because of one or two trouble makers in the club. Every club has one. Some have two! So, initially-tactfully keep these people away from the prospect hams and club members.
I've seen new hams join a club after getting licensed, (Its a good idea to give newly licensed hams a FREE 1 year membership) Encourage them to join ARRL, It's not expensive.
Strongly encourage continuing education and license advancement. As a VE and an ARRL Certified instructor I find that teaching the license class is a must as opposed to teaching the test. I refuse to teach the test. I have personally met new hams that passed the technician and general class license but could not turn on an HT even a new extra class that could not program a repeater in the VCO mode in his new Yaesu.

Don't give Bofengs, Wouxums, TYT type radios to the new licensee, for two reasons. 1) You're flooding the market with cheap Chinese crap that can be programmed outside the legal band plan. If you insist on giving a new ham a transceiver buy a transceiver made by the Big 5. Like a Yaesu FT-4XR, It's dual band, KISS and it's about $85 and it's an attractive radio to a novice. Or an Icom IC-V85 2 meter HT 2) In giving away a radio you've given the illusion of entitlement. Nothing is free in this world. Ham radio is not a cheap hobby. Let's not give a prospect any false expectations or illusions. Be honest and up front. Respect!

There's much more to this complex issue.

I enjoy the hobby of ham radio, Sometimes I might avoid a particular ham. It's doesn't spoil the hobby for me. Others it can be a 'Debbie Downer'

W5TXR Philosophy: "It's not the Class of the license that the Amateur holds. But, the Class of the Amateur that holds the License" MAL

I think this is an exellent entry level training package. I am a member of the K9WRA Woodford County repeater association. Wow! Technician Class study material and an HT for $22 dollars! This is awesome for new and prospective Hams... The Woodford County Repeater Asssociation is conducting a Ham In A Day Class, at the Woodford County EOC in Roanoke, IL. I will begin at 8:00 AM CDT, April 22. Most should walk out of the EOC with their Technician class liscenes. I am going to tell those conducting this class about this wonderful offer. I hope they approve of it so the new Techs can get the on the local repeaters will a decent Quality low cost HT

Thank you for the like my friend. I just talked to my friend
Todd - KD9WHE on the K9WRA 146.610 repeater. He is a a General Class now, but after he got his Technician Class license he bought the QRZ New Ham Jumpstart Package. He said that the low cost 2m/ 440 HT performed very well and was impressed with it

I would like to address. Lutfi - KQ4GBA. Thank you for the liking my post sir. And congratulations on achieving your Extra Class. Well done indeed...I got my Technician Class license in 1994, and my General Class in 2007. I have had many people assist me for over the years in my wonderful adventure in Amateur Radio. These Elmers provided me with the encouragement I needed, and the instruction I needed to be successful in my Amateur Radio endevors, and upgrade to to General Class. We were all new to this wonderful vocation/ hobby at one time, and know that encouragement, and instruction is vital to each individual’s learning, and the advancement and continuation of Amateur Radio. Many of us have elected to assist new and prospective Ham Radio Operators, as many have assisted us Old Timers. And that is the key to bringing more Ham Radio Operators into this great fraternity, and advancing The Art Of Radio. Ham Radio.... Bringing People together from all walks of life. I love it! Lol. You, like myself, are a proud Motorola elitist. Bravo Zulu. We have lofty intentions and goals using our Tech-portion privileges. Yes, we are in a class very few hammies get to experience. For example: we can drive into the city and the 7500 is silent as a grave, whilst Joe Hammy's hammy radio is squawking with inter-mod and street light switch noise. Where I think we differ is that you perceive this program as bad because they are giving out radios you do not care for. Am I wrong here? OK, fair enough, but you think it should be a vastly more expensive radio. Pfft!

As for out-of-band, and you know, very well as I do, Moto is easily capable of [VHF/R1/R2/700-800] playing outside hammy bands. In fact, my 8000 and 7000 had GMRS, MRS, FRS, VHF-marine, MARS, CAP, Train, Public Safety (analog/P-25) pairs, as well as the entire DHS-FIOG & State IOG, etc. programmed in... so easy a Caveman can do it. Not a crime, but ker'chunking OOB (that is not Old Orchard Beach) certainly is. Thank goodness for Transmit Inhibit!

That should NOT be a big deal because I worked for some companies that do the same thing on their giveaway.. it is not because the item is superior than another... THEY CALL THIS BRANDING .

So let me ask you this

QRZ gives you a brand new ICOM IC-7851 but they have removed the ICOM LOGO and replaced it with their own QRZ logo so you ended up with a QRZ-7851 radio instead, so would you be crying fault as well ?

I do not see anything wrong with their practice on this one.
