    Went to a UK museum recently, and in their telecomms hall was an exhibit of a telephone exchange, with dial-type phones that you could actually talk around the hall with. Each phone had a list nearby, with the extension numbers of every phone in the hall. I was watching a youngster pressing his finger into each of the rotary dial positions to try and call one of the other phones. Obviously nothing was happening & then someone explained that he had to turn the dial, not just tap the number. His response...

    "thats rubbish. It will take ages to dial a phone number, and how the hell are you supposed to TXT on this thing, the letters next to the numbers are all over the place"

    <facepalm>

    One of my teenage nephews asked me what kind of cell phone I had as a kid. After my sister and I laughed for about 5 minutes, we explained what kind of phones there were in the 1950s and 1960s.

    Updated photos ...

    Yes, I too have succumbed to the 7300’s siren song.

    The gear in the shack acquired over more than 5 decades of hamming - from old keys and bugs, a kind of old but still reliable amp, a not too terribly old and still wonderful FT-1000MP ...

    to a merely months old direct conversion SDR in a box whose heart and soul is a tabula rasa FPGA magically transformed into an amazingly capable, surprisingly affordable, MF-HF+6 transceiver by the young engineers at Icom.

    What a wonderful road we’ve traveled - and continue to travel.
    What a wonderful fraternity.

    Like so many Americans, I'm swimming in debt, but not one penny of it is for ham gear. That's been cash only since the beginning.

    My philosophy is, debt is for investments, cash is for hobbies.

    A closer view. Since my homebrew amplifier's B+ is at chassis ground potential, there's no lethal voltage topside, so no ventilation-impeding cover is needed. The LED's around the output bandswitch show the position of the input switch.

    More details on my ORZ Page.
