New member here, recently passed Tech and waiting to take the General. After a lot of reading and waffling back and forth, I decided on a Kenwood TH-F6A over a Yaesu VX-7r as my first UHF/VHF HT.

Looking forward to getting on the air and also figuring out what antenna I can use to listen to HF (on my IC-718) without bringing lightning into my shack! Antennas are a whole other thing I have to learn!

For learning antenna theory and practical building information, I highly recommend the ARRL Antenna Handbook. It is a little pricey but I believe you can order it without the antenna modeling software, which can save a few dollars if on a tight budget.

Antenna building and experimentation is one of my favorite parts of this hobby. One can make a very effective antenna out of junk or salvage wire and parts. Maybe that is showing the skinflint side of me, but I love it.

Good luck and hope you have many years of enjoyment from the hobby.
