OMG!!! Arguably one of the most known/QSL wanted hams in our lifetime.... wow. Very sad news - may he rest in peace Dave W7UUU
Very sad news indeed. R.I.P. Monk Apollo. I also remember another cleric, and well known ham, Father Moran in Nepal.
For many decades, Monk Apollo was the sole operator from the rare country of Mount Athos. A talented and religious man, Monk Apollo combined an engineering background with a deep religious faith. He became an international ambassador for ham radio and one of our most famous hams. Sadly, Monk Apollo underwent surgery in 2016 for cancer, and although he was in remission for almost three years, he succumbed (to complications) according to JE1LET and DX-world (https://dx-world.net/sv2asp-monk-apollo-s-k/ ) We will all feel the loss of this great man of faith and the opportunity he gave us to communicate with one of the rarest of rare DX spots. RIP. 73 Chip W1YW
SV1DPI provided additional information on Monk Apollo's passing. Take that as 'official'. See--- https://dxnews.com/forum/forum/silent-keys/18485-sv2asp-a-docheiariou-monastery-mount-athos-greece I had a friendly, written correspondence with Monk Apollo after his 2016 surgery, to encourage him in his healing. He was always grateful for the well wishes of his ham friends across the globe. A wonderful, humble man.
