The Suffolk County Legislature has introduced a resolution officially designating the month of June as “Amateur Radio Month” in Suffolk County. Introduced by Legislators James Mazzarella and Tom Kennedy, the resolution recognizes the contributions amateur radio operators make to public safety, emergency preparedness, technical advancement, and community service throughout Suffolk County. The resolution specifically acknowledges the role amateur radio operators play when traditional communications systems fail during storms, emergencies, and large public events, noting that amateur radio continues to provide a resilient communications capability across both coastal and inland communities in the county. The Legislature also cited June’s significance to the amateur radio community including annual ARRL Field Day activities held throughout the county as part of the reasoning behind the designation. Beginning in 2026 and continuing each year thereafter, June will officially be recognized as “Amateur Radio Month” in Suffolk County. You can read the full resolution attached to this post. Interesting. Many Suffolk Towns have ARES operators and shacks set up for exactly the reasons stated. Southampton Town does not. Belonging to Bonac Amatuer Radio Club, never had a shack however the persons in charge of radio communications for East Hampton town, last person and present, have it set up in town hall are Ares Operators. When the current communications person went to Southampton stated that the Ares room was not operational. I mentioned this to former deputy supervisor however he felt that current systems in place were enough. I guess time will tell... I remember during one of our hurricanes, electric out, cable out, cell phones out along with lines at gas stations with generators. Growing up out here, we always seem to take it on the chin and along with insurers pulling out of our market, perhaps they know its just a matter of time....K2bkr Southampton
Is the BONARC club still active ? Their website shows 2024 information and nothing about current or updated meetings. Thank you @W2DIY for writing this up and making it down to represent both ARRL and the local Clubs.
Negative. The treasurer is an sk, and they never really had a qth which would have helped. The president was flat out busy for years, so meetings especially post covid just went away.
Congrats to those hams in Suffolk County who spent the time and effort to make this resolution a perpetual reality. Well done! 73, Joe W4JF
Ham radio month? I thought the month of June was reserved for something else, but I can't remember what it was.
