Section of Chivasso (IQ1GJ), Piedmont, Italy, is proud to announce the 1st Edition of the "Fratelli Judica Cordiglia — I Pirati dello Spazio" Amateur Radio Award, dedicated to the memory of two extraordinary Italian radio amateurs: Achille (I1TCH) and Giovanni Battista (IK1GEK) Judica Cordiglia. WHO WERE THEY? In the early 1960s, from their homemade listening station "Torre Bert" on the rooftops of Turin — with the famous Mole Antonelliana in the background — the two brothers intercepted signals from Soviet space missions during the Space Race. They captured the heartbeat of Laika, the voice of Yuri Gagarin, and transmissions from other cosmonauts. The Soviet Union itself named them "Space Pirates" through Radio Moscow. Their story made headlines around the world and inspired generations of radio amateurs.
