I have an older Compaq running Windows 98SE. About a month ago, the TDK CD-RW quit writing. It would read fine and you could copy from the CD to the hard drive.

Since I wanted to get my data out of the old "box" I sprang for a new CD-RW drive. Installed the Sony with the same settings, etc as the old TDK drive.

SAME PROBLEM: I can read from the new drive; copy from the new drive. BUT I CAN'T WRITE TO THE NEW DRIVE!!!

Yes, the Device Manager recognizes the new Sony drive and shows that it's properly functioning with NO conflicts.

I also ran ScanDisk and DiskDefragger with no luck.

Anyone have any ideas, suggestions, etc. before I go into "Data Recovery"?

Check to make sure the IDE channel your CD-RW drive is on is set to use UltraDMA mode not PIO. This setting is buried somewhere in the properties tab for the device when you bring up the device under Device Manager.
