Soldering RG-6 Aluminum Braid

    Title says it all, I am trying to use the RG-6 75 ohm cable I bought to make some matching stubs for a turnstile moxon rectangle pair for VHF/UHF. Right now I am just crimping to them but want a better solution. I bought a butane torch and tried to braze with some aluminum brazing rod... I think I need some special flux for that? I am not sure. What are your thoughts?

    Is it just aluminium or is there some copper braid also?

    The aluminium in my cheaper coax appears to have a thin coating to eliminate corrosion although I found it will still corrode quickly with ingress of water. (My reactivity table tells me that aluminium and copper are some way apart and would probably generate some useful voltage). I've just soldered the copper braid, sealed the ends to eliminate moisture ingress and assumed that, at VHF, there's so much capacitance between copper and aluminium that it's effectively connected anyway, even with the coating.

    I understand that there some very cheap cables where the "aluminium" is actually metallised mylar or polyester. It's easy to check that one out.

    ::Why? I'd crimp with a conductive anti-oxide compound in the joint. If you add any "pigtail" length to a coaxial connection on VHF, all that does is lower the antenna's resonant frequency, make the pigtail part of the radiator, and add loss to the system. Actually for a Moxon connected using RG-6, I'd install a tin plated copper "F" female connector to the antenna itself (soldering its terminals to the copper wire of the Moxon), creating a very excellent coaxial connection, then use regular crimp "F" connectors like cable TV installers use on the coax itself. Works perfectly.

    CRIMPING is the solution. That is why Snap-N-Seal (Thomas & Betts trademark) connectors are used.

    They have the traditional "F" as well as BNC and RCA connectors now ... why not use BNC ??

    Some space and military connector work requires CRIMP and not solder!
