    1) I would go with a brand new Bug, I have owned my share of old ones but now I am down to just one. That one I purchased new.

    2) If you belong to a club find the CW operators and your bound to find someone who uses a bug. Hopefully they know how to properly use one and if they do ask them if they would help you get started. Bad habits learned from the start are harder to correct as time passes so learn from someone who knows what they are doing.

    a bug

I bought me a left handed bug from vibroplex last year and I love it. At 72 years of age I figured, what the heck, mgiht as well go whole hog. Dont use it except on straight key night because I am working on the dxcc on cw with my single lever vibroplex vibrokeyer. When I have earned that I will spend more time with the bug.

have been using semi auto keys for about twentyfive years
have owned about a dozen bugs

my favorite Vibroplex bug is a seventyfive plus year old
    japan base with pin stripes
    Lightning Bug
    its missing the shorting switch
    some of the paint chipped
    looks kinda beat up

twenty some years ago bought it at Dayton
    for twentyfive bucks

    no other Vibroplex
feels as good as that old Lightning Bug

    don't know about other ops
but to me every Vibroplex feels different
    from every other Vibroplex

seems to me the older a bug is
    the better it feels

    new jeweled Orignal
    have one
    never liked it

also have owned some GHD bugs
    wonderfull feel
    but very expensive

have yet to get my hands on a Les Logan or Ted McElroy bug

    yours truly
