OM Cor Veldman (PE0SHF) Silent Key Met het overlijden van Cor Veldman verliest de gemeenschap van radio-amateurs en de stichting Radiotelescoop Dwingeloo (CAMRAS) in het bijzonder, een buitengewoon betrokken mens. Cor behoorde tot die groep vrijwilligers die zich onvermoeibaar inzette om het historisch erfgoed van de radiotechniek voor toekomstige generaties te kunnen behouden. Hij voelde zich thuis waar techniek, experiment en de samenwerking tussen mensen samenkwamen. Collega-vrijwilligers waardeerden hem om zijn praktische instelling, zijn technische inzicht en zijn bereidheid om anderen te helpen. Zij noemden hem ook wel “de elektriciteitsmeester van Dwingeloo”. Een bijzonder hoofdstuk in zijn leven vormde dan ook zijn betrokkenheid bij de redding en herbestemming van de beroemde Radiotelescoop Dwingeloo. Toen de monumentale telescoop na het einde van zijn wetenschappelijke loopbaan dreigde te verdwijnen, behoorde Cor al snel, samen met onafscheidelijke collega Piet Zijlstra, tot de groep radioamateurs en vrijwilligers die zich inzette voor behoud van dit unieke instrument. In 2007 werd hiervoor de stichting Radiotelescoop Dwingeloo (CAMRAS) opgericht, een initiatief van een groep radioamateurs en amateurastronomen, die de radiotelescoop nieuw leven gaf. Cor was al snel vanaf het begin nauw betrokken bij deze ontwikkeling. In reportages rond de oprichting van CAMRAS trad hij op als vertegenwoordiger van de vrijwilligersgroep die geloofde dat de radiotelescoop opnieuw een toekomst kon krijgen voor radioastronomie, educatie en radioamateurisme. Dankzij de inzet van mensen als Cor werd de telescoop niet alleen behouden, maar groeide zij opnieuw uit tot een internationaal bekend centrum voor experimenten, EME-communicatie, educatie en publieksactiviteiten. Ook in de jaren daarna bleef Cor actief betrokken bij het technische onderhoud en de verdere ontwikkeling van de elektrische en hoogfrequente installaties rond de Dwingeloo Radiotelescoop. Wie Cor kende, herinnert zich vooral zijn technische kunde, enthousiasme en betrokkenheid. Hij behoorde tot die generatie radioamateurs die technische uitdagingen zag als kansen om te leren en kennis te delen. Zijn werk laat zich niet alleen meten in installaties, antennes of projecten, maar vooral in de mensen die hij wist te inspireren. Met het overlijden van Cor Veldman is een markant mens ons ontvallen. Zijn bijdrage aan het Nederlandse radioamateurisme en aan het behoud van de Dwingeloo Radiotelescoop blijft echter zichtbaar in alles wat daar vandaag nog gebeurt. Wij wensen zijn familie, vrienden, mede-amateurs en alle CAMRAS-vrijwilligers veel sterkte bij het verwerken van dit verlies. Namens bestuur stichting Radiotelescoop Dwingeloo (CAMRAS) Dick Harms PA2DW With the passing of Cor Veldman, the amateur radio community – and the Dwingeloo Radio Telescope Foundation (CAMRAS) in particular – has lost an exceptionally dedicated individual. Cor was one of those volunteers who worked tirelessly to preserve the historical heritage of radio technology for future generations. He felt at home wherever technology, experimentation and collaboration came together. Fellow volunteers valued him for his practical approach, his technical insight and his willingness to help others. They also referred to him as ‘the electricity master of Dwingeloo’. A particularly significant chapter in his life was therefore his involvement in the rescue and repurposing of the famous Dwingeloo Radio Telescope. When the monumental telescope was in danger of disappearing after the end of its scientific career, Cor, together with his inseparable colleague Piet Zijlstra, soon became part of the group of radio amateurs and volunteers dedicated to preserving this unique instrument. In 2007, the Dwingeloo Radio Telescope Foundation (CAMRAS) was established for this purpose, an initiative by a group of radio amateurs and amateur astronomers who breathed new life into the radio telescope. Cor was closely involved in this development right from the start. In reports on the founding of CAMRAS, he acted as a representative of the group of volunteers who believed that the radio telescope could once again have a future in radio astronomy, education and amateur radio. Thanks to the dedication of people like Cor, the telescope was not only preserved but grew once again into an internationally renowned centre for experiments, EME communication, education and public engagement. In the years that followed, Cor remained actively involved in the technical maintenance and further development of the electrical and high-frequency installations at the Dwingeloo Radio Telescope. 1 Those who knew Cor remember him above all for his technical expertise, enthusiasm and dedication. He belonged to that generation of radio amateurs who saw technical challenges as opportunities to learn and share knowledge. His work cannot be measured solely in terms of installations, antennas or projects, but above all in the people he managed to inspire. With the passing of Cor Veldman, we have lost a remarkable individual. However, his contribution to Dutch amateur radio and to the preservation of the Dwingeloo Radio Telescope remains evident in everything that still takes place there today. We wish his family, friends, fellow radio amateurs and all CAMRAS volunteers much strength as they come to terms with this loss.
