Not anymore. The chinese toroids have changed that. You can get Q like 1400 in the broadcast band. 600-1000 was about all you can get with an air core coil and 660-strand/dollar a foot Litz.
My first was a 50C5 into a long wire, using a 2x4 with nails hammered into it as solder tie points. A toilet paper roll as the coil and a 365pf tuning cap, put on the AM broadcast band. I was not yet licensed as a ham, didn't even know what a ham was at that time. Have no idea what it put out but, it would light up an NE-2 neon bulb holding it next to the wire antenna. It might have been this one, or similar at least the date is about the time I made it but I don't remember using a crystal and being money poor, don't remember where I got the parts either but it worked after a fashion.
