Thanks Jeff. That story about the USS Pueblo brings back memories . . . they still hold that ship over in N Korea, and just thinking about it today still humiliates. Dave, W7DGJ

Great article as always. I would add that there should be an award for people promoting and furthering interest in Amateur Radio. Without people like that, we could be faced with a dying art.

    Thanks again,

Completely agree with you. The Dayton Hamvention recognizes amateurs who operate in this fashion each year with their awards. Thanks Doug for the nice comment -- publishing another column tomorrow! Dave, W7DGJ

    Regarding ham radio perfection ...

Sadly, Pat Buller (W7RQT) is no longer with us, but when he was alive he built a number of these link-coupled antenna matching units for friends:

My unit is rated at 800w, has 4 taps on the link, 12 taps on the main coil (to cover 80m-10m), 50 ohm unbalanced input, front panel switching for two bypassed unbalanced outputs (I use them for a 1.5kw dummy load and a remotely tuned vertical) and two scale (0-200w, 0-800w) direct meter reading of forward and reverse power.

Pat custom designed and built these for each "customer" according to their needs.

I've used mine for around 25 years to match various ladder line fed doublets. Currently, it's matching a 172' doublet at 32', and I've used it running 5-500w with various radios and two mid-range power amplifiers (Yaesu FL-2100B, Acom 1010). It has always functioned flawlessly.

    Hi Steve,

Man, that is a thing of beauty inside, eh? Nice . . .

Here’s a photo of the front panel …[IMG]

Those of us who did drafting in the days before drafting software will recognize the lettering on the front panel and the meter face, both of which were done by hand with a K&E lettering template.
