It wasnt a handheld. With the box the antenna (RH-770) becomes able to connect to a stationary transceiver. I used a FTM-400 for this. The average range with 20W PEP is about 70 km. When its really quiet on a sunday morning sometimes about up to 90 km. With special conditions much more. To this I spoke direct point to point to handheld users with my configuration at home, who are in POTA or SOTA , on this range. And this was equal if it was 2m or 70cm. This configuration is really sensitive and needs always open eyes for not to destroy. Because more than 20W on these antenna makes it immediatly broken.
Another excellent article. Especially the section on purchasing used equipment, don't forget to check any local thrift store and non ham electronics stores either. As an example here in Salem, Or. we have the local electronics store NORVAC ELECTRONICS which I only visit about once every 5 to 10 years. This year being past the 10 year mark for me visiting them I was alerted to a mint condition Icom IC765 HF transceiver that only needed a replacement RF board installed, every thing else was there including the old board and a mint condition transceiver for only $40 dollars. Well anyone who knows me will say that I'm the original cheap ham and rarely take chances on anything but this was just to good for me to pass up and after installing the new RF main board and using a diode from the original RF board I performed the Pass Band tuning mod and a minor power supply mod to add in a better more modern current shunt for the transmitter, I now have my favorite transceiver that has taken the same bench space aside my trusty Elecraft K3S. Don't get me wrong I love the K3S and its seamless integration to the KPA500/KAT500 combo but after an hour of fiddling around I was able to get the IC765 working with the KPA500/KAT500 setup and operating in parallel with the K3S and I discovered that excellent ICOM TX and RX audio that I had been missing for 50 years as a ham. So guys and girls if getting started in this hobby don't forget those local non ham electronic and thrift stores where you just never know what you may find.
What I find truly amazing is just how well Dave W7UUU knows all of the club members! When he writes about them he relates the most interesting details of their lives—both hobby related and others—and captures the readers’ interests. Each issue is a valuable addition to QRZ!
This is truly the best magazine—so well made. Congratulations to everyone involved! I really enjoy reading it. vy 73 ELAN EA5QB

My information about the Chernobyl OTHR is a bit different. It never was really in action. It was build for at least just one session. The developer had 1986 the appointment with Moscow to deliver these new soviet system. The local nuclear plant was to that time not ready to handle the OTHR in cause of a damage. It wasnt able to run the reactor with 100%. But to that time they tried, because the Kreml awaited results. And thats the sad story about the Chernobyl disaster. The reactor got an overload and exploded. These informations are just not confirmed rumors here in Europe about what happend really to that time.
Additional info: When trying the RH-770 experiment, there is now a good substitute for the antenna. The Nagoya SP-76 is a so called Super High-Gain antenna and is able to take much more PEP. At next it is as sensitive as the RH-770, a bit shorter, but the coil is able to stand more influence from outside. The first own test showed, that a good performance is given.
This is a terrific magazine. By comments on Youtube I linked the Conelrad and Woodpecker videos to their respective articles.
