I use a High Sierra Sidekick which comes stock with a 3' whip, I quickly changed this for a 6' whip for mobile and a thick 5' top section with large capacity hat when parked up (image on my QRZ page), the latter makes a 6db difference over the 6' whip, if you have the time and don't mind switching top sections it is worth all the effort.

Alan, K0BG, has put a lot of effort into passing on his knowledge / experience with regard to mobile operation and his site is an absolute must if you want to operate mobile, he's not a fan of the short screwdriver type antennas, but we all have to live within our budget and situation, it's all about minimising loss, we are at a disadvantage with such a short antenna in the first place, so everything you can do to minimise further loss is worth it.

I'm very happy with how my antenna is working, it's not the best, but it's about as good as I can afford for now ;)
